The Calm Before the Christmas Clutterstorm
Every November, your home begins quietly transforming into a festive-but-chaotic holding facility. Holiday cards appear. School projects multiply like gremlins. Early presents from overexcited relatives sneak in. Suddenly, the dining table vanishes without a trace.
It’s charming, until it isn’t. So before December descends with its tinsel tornado, we do The December Reset: a gentle, strategic pre-holiday declutter. Nothing dramatic, just enough space to breathe again.

Why Decluttering Now Actually Matters
This isn’t just about making room for new things (though it certainly helps). It’s about teaching kids something most adults haven’t mastered: decision-making around their belongings. When children learn to sort, choose, and let go, they’re really learning emotional regulation, planning, and how to create calm in their own environment. Pretty powerful for a 10-minute tidy, right?
Start with a Story, Not a Lecture
Announce “We’re decluttering!” and your child will suddenly develop a deep emotional bond with a toy they haven’t touched since 2018. Instead, begin gently: “Remember when you loved this?” or “I think you might’ve outgrown this one.” It frames decluttering as part of their growing-up story, not as punishment for having stuff.
Make Decluttering a Tiny Daily Habit
Treat it like brushing teeth: small, consistent, and shockingly effective. Out loud, model little choices: “This mug didn’t get much love this year.” Kids notice. They learn that editing their belongings is normal, not dramatic, not emotional, just life. The Maybe Box also works wonders. Put uncertain items inside, date it, revisit later.

Respect Their Odd Little Treasures
Every child has their collection — rocks, shells, rubber ducks, mysterious pieces of plastic they SWEAR are important. Don’t fight it, just contain it. One box, one jar, one shelf. When it’s full, decisions must be made.
Keep It Light + Celebrate the Wins
Turn on music. Take silly before-and-afters. Donate together and grab hot cocoa on the way home. The goal isn’t Pinterest perfection, it’s creating a home that feels easy, cosy, and calm. Before the flood of gifts, glitter, and festivities, helping kids let go teaches them the most beautiful lesson of all: We make space for what matters next.
