Post-Remodel Organization: Unpacking and Organizing Made Easy

Writer: Tara ButtonTara Button

A home remodel is an exciting transformation—a chance to refresh your space and improve how well it functions. But once the dust settles (literally), you’re left with a new challenge: unpacking and organizing everything back into place.

The process is overwhelming, with furniture displaced, items covered in dust, and boxes stacked in every corner. As a professional organizer, I’ve seen it all—from clients struggling to find their daily essentials to those who let boxes linger for months after a renovation.

What if, instead, you could walk into your newly renovated space and see everything set up just how you’ve always wanted? Through my Unpacking Services, I’ve seen the sheer bliss of clients stepping into a fully unpacked space.

Follow these tips if you’re ready to set up your newly remodeled space like a professional organizer.

Start with Essentials

Before the remodel begins, set aside a survival kit with everyday necessities. The contents will vary depending on the space you’re remodeling, but should always include toiletries, a few changes of clothes, medications, important documents, and—most importantly—your coffee maker. Having these essentials easily accessible will save your sanity and prevent frantic rummaging through boxes when you’re trying to settle back in.

Declutter Before You Unpack

A remodel is the perfect time to evaluate what you really need in your home. Before placing items back in cabinets and closets, ask yourself:

  • Do I use this regularly?

  • Does this item serve a purpose in my newly remodeled space?

  • Is it worth keeping, or is it just taking up space?

Donate, discard, or repurpose anything that no longer fits your needs. The less clutter you have, the easier it will be to maintain organization and love your space.

Pro Tips

⭐ Staying focused is half the battle! Try to finish one space before moving on to the next. It’s like a

game of Tetris, but with better prizes.

⭐ Break down and discard boxes as you go—unless you fancy living in a cardboard jungle.

Set Up Organized Systems from the Start

Unpacking isn’t just about getting things out of boxes—it’s about setting yourself up for success in your beautiful new space.

Keep it simple:

  • Designate a space for everything so you’re not constantly wondering where you put the scissors.

  • Label shelves and containers so everyone in the household knows where everything belongs—and puts them away. (A girl can dream.)

  • Use drawer dividers and storage bins to keep smaller items tidy and accessible.

  • Adopt a ‘one in, one out’ rule to keep clutter at bay.

  • Keep daily-use items within easy reach and stash seasonal things out of the way.

Take Breaks and Pace Yourself

Setting up your entire space in a day or two is unrealistic and exhausting. Set manageable goals based on the size of your remodel:

  • Focus on one room at a time.

  • Take breaks to avoid burnout.

  • Reward yourself for progress (chocolate, wine, or a relaxing break — whatever works!)

  • Play music or listen to a podcast to make the process more enjoyable.

Add Personal Touches to Make Your House Feel Like Home

Once the essentials are in place, take a moment to add those finishing touches that make a house feel like home—family photos, cozy throws, decorative accents, and your favorite scents. These small details bring warmth and personality to your space.
